Perfectionism
The imperfections we perceive in ourselves, others, and the world often end up teaching us a great deal and contributing to our growth, development, and well-being in ways we can’t foresee. They provide us with opportunities to stretch ourselves and discover our talents, abilities, and insights we may never have tapped otherwise. They can bring out our humanity and draw us together with other people. In many ways, they can be the best part of our lives.
Setbacks
It may seem as though our growth is a series of alternating steps, forward and back. Just when we feel we’ve made some progress and overcome a hurdle, another one may appear. We may often wish we could just stay where we are and not face another problem ever again. But more setbacks are always inevitable. We can choose to see these setbacks as a natural part of our progress forward. We can think of them as opportunities for review in which to exercise new attitudes and behaviors. Over times we realize just how far we’ve come, one step at a time.
Good Enough
While we need to avoid judging ourselves, we can judge our actions and choices to determine whether or not to continue to behave in the same way in the future. We can review our choice by first asking ourselves, Is it harmless? By first considering this question, we can avoid making many mistakes. All of our choices and actions should at least do no harm. Our second question can be, Is it helpful? Anything we do that provides a positive contribution to the world and humanity is of value. Trying to do your best; accepting, and amending, and learning from our mistakes; and making a conscious effort to be harmless and helpful can make all of our actions good enough.
Taking Risks
Accepting risks as a part of decision making frees us to make better decisions. Living our lives trying to avoid risk taking can, in fact, cause us to make very poor decisions. Avoiding risks is futile in any case. Life just doesn’t offer us perfect, clear solutions amid all the risky options. We are always taking risks, even if we don’t recognize it. If we are aware of the risks involved in our decisions, we can make better, smarter choices, free of fears, doubts, worries, and delusions about perfection. We can accept whatever results from our decisions, understanding that risks are always a part of any choice.
